The Supmaran, designed in Switzerland and Austria, is a novel boating concept comprising a kit that converts two stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) into a two-seater catamaran.

And if you fancy a break from paddling, there’s also a mount that fits most standard electric trolling motors.
The Supmaran kit, currently being crowdfunded on Kickstarter, includes a galvanised steel lightweight frame, sunshade roof, two chairs, 80-litre Scuba Box for storage and two inflatable SUPs.
If you already have your own SUPs, you can choose to purchase the kit without them.
The entire setup fits into three bags suitable for transport in any car and can be ready for use within minutes.
The company recommends using a 12V electric motor with a maximum power of 500W, such as the Talamex TM40, which you have to purchase separately.
The Supmaran will operate for around 1.5 to 3 hours if you use the proposed water-resistant LiFePO4 battery with 50Ah or 100Ah capacity.
The 80-litre storage box has room for the battery plus snorkelling gear and other items you might need while you’re on the waves.
The Supmaran Light is available for €1,920 (approx. £1,621) and weighs 48 kg with a maximum load of 200 kg:
- 2 transport bags with boards, paddle, and pump: 94 x 48 x 33 cm / 12 kg each
- 1 transport bag with roof and frame: 106 x 55 x 24 cm / 24 kg
- 1 scuba box with lid: 78 × 35 cm / 2.8 kg
The Supmaran Frame Set is available for €1,266 (approx. £1,069) and includes straps to securely attach existing boards to the frame, accommodating nearly all SUP and windsurf boards.
Supmaran guarantee spare parts availability for ten years, with the modular design allowing easy part replacement, and the galvanised steel frame tested under harsh conditions.
The Supmaran project began 30 years ago when founders Martin Schwaiger and Gregor Schuster had the idea of building a catamaran from old surfboards.
Their first prototype was built from bamboo rods, two regular sun loungers, and a cantilever umbrella.
The idea gained momentum in 2019 with the advent of inflatable SUP boards.
Following four prototype generations, the team are now seeking £99,592 in crowdfunding to move into commercial production, with the campaign running until 4th August, 2024.
