US-based DIY mechanic Brent Walter invented the Volkspod, a mini motorbike design incorporating an old VW fender for the chassis, and it started a home-build craze.

In 2019, Brent Walter, “Maker and builder of a variety of things”, embarked upon a just-for-fun project converting an old VW Beetle into a suped up hot rod version.
Impressive though his ‘Volksrod’ was, he stumbled upon a genius idea for the leftover scraps which has since started a craze among mechanics.
Brent used the distinctive Beetle fenders, the curved panel that sits above the wheel, as the basis for an enchanting and quirky mini motorbike dubbed the Volkspod.
Along with the fender, the machine features a custom-built frame, 79cc petrol engine, diddy 13 x 6-inch tyres, headlight, taillight, handlebars and seat.
In all, the DIY engineer built three Volkspods, later adding a sidecar to his earliest prototype.
He documented the development journey on Insta and the internet applauded.
Among those clapping: YouTubers Henny Butabi and Ultimate Rebuilds, and maker Jonah Mikesell who all built their own Volkspods.
Henny and Jonah went electric, and Jonah even published a handy step-by-step guide for other enthusiasts to follow and many have.
While most of the builds so far have not been for sale, Volkspod Europe are now offering custom-built Volkspods with shipping across Europe.
And Mexico-based Aldekas Studio have taken the idea further this year by adding two more wheels, giving birth to the Volkscart concept.
