Iceland will showcase the Lavaforming project at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, set for May 2025.

Led by Icelandic architect Arnhildur Pálmadóttir, Lavaforming explores how controlled lava flows can create sustainable building materials.
Pálmadóttir, founder of s.ap architects, imagines a future where lava is harnessed as a resource to build entire cities, replacing harmful mining practices.
A teaser animation set in 2150 features a grey factory where lava first reaches, producing building materials such as bricks from the molten rock.
A series of channels guide the lava into city streets, forming the urban foundation while the bricks are transported for construction.
According to Pálmadóttir, the concept builds on Iceland’s history of transforming geothermal energy, positioning lava as the next natural power to be utilised.
Iceland’s frequent volcanic activity makes it an ideal location to explore how architecture can integrate with nature’s forces.
The project is Iceland’s first open call to participate in the Venice Architecture Biennale and will feature at its national pavilion.
Pálmadóttir and her team will present this ambitious proposal, which combines sustainability, architecture, and creative thinking to address climate challenges.
Lavaforming suggests a paradigm shift in how building materials are sourced, reducing reliance on non-renewable energy.
The Icelandic Pavilion is commissioned by Iceland Design and Architecture, with support from the Ministry of Culture and Business Affairs.
According to s.ap architects, the exhibition aims to spark discussion about the role of architecture in addressing global environmental challenges.
