Berlin-based start-up SIUT, in collaboration with Deutsche Bahn (DB), have developed a dynamic rail passenger guidance system called the Illuminated Platform Edge.
From Superinnovators 19/09/24

This system comprises individual concrete slabs with integrated LED lights that interact with each other to provide real-time train information.
The concrete slabs display various light patterns, using different colours, to indicate information like the stopping position, occupancy status, and train length.
SIUT say the system enhances platform safety by warning passengers with red lights, reducing the number of people entering danger zones.
Additionally, the system improves punctuality by optimising the distribution of passengers along the platform, shortening boarding and alighting times.

According to the company, the LED lights also facilitate accessibility, assisting individuals with hearing and visual impairments through visual signals and contrast effects.
The system was first tested at Stuttgart Bad Cannstatt station between 2018 and 2020, providing valuable insights for further development.
The new generation, now installed at Berlin’s Südkreuz station for testing, uses line-shaped LEDs for clearer visual information and guidance.
SIUT have been researching the integration of concrete and light since 2012 in cooperation with TU Berlin and officially launched in 2015.
They say their system, developed with DB, not only improves safety and comfort for passengers but also modernises the overall aesthetic of train stations.
