China’s DJI (f. 2006), a leading drone manufacturer, released a video this week showing its DJI FlyCart 30 (FC30) smashing ice off power lines in sub -10°C conditions with a 23 kg de-icing stick.

Th build up of ice on power lines can cause sagging, leading to power outages and is historically removed by hand or melting it through a controlled short circuit.

Launched on 10th Jan, 2024, the FlyCart 30 (£13,775) is a heavy payload delivery drone with max. speed of 44mph and capable of carrying a 30 kg payload for up to 16 km, or 28 km without payload.

The location of the power lines and other companies involved were not disclosed.
