How bloodstain tails can reveal new forensic details

Forensic science has captured the public imagination by storm, as the profusion of “true crime” media in the last decade or so suggests.

By now, most of us know that evidence left at a crime scene, such as blood, can often reveal information that is key to investigating and understanding the circumstances around a crime — and that scientific methods can help interpret that information.

In Physics of Fluids, by AIP Publishing, a group of scientists from Boston University and the University of Utah demonstrated how bloodstains can yield even more valuable details than what is typically gathered by detectives, forensic scientists, and crime scene investigators.

By examining the protrusions that deviate from the boundaries of otherwise elliptical bloodstains, the researchers studied how these “tails” are formed.

“These protrusions are typically only used to get a sense of the direction that the drop traveled, but are otherwise neglected,” said author James Bird.

In fact, previous studies have primarily focused on larger blood drops falling vertically on flat surfaces or on inclined surfaces where gravity can reshape and obscure the tails.

By contrast, the new study involved a series of high-speed experiments with human blood droplets with diameters of less than a millimeter impacting horizontal surfaces at various angles.

“We show that the precise flow that determines the tail length differs from the flow responsible for the size and shape of the elliptical portion of the stain,” said Bird.

“In other words, the tail lengths encompass additional independent information that can help analysts reconstruct where the blood drop actually came from.”

Experimental setup. (a) Blood flows through a needle that is fastened to a rotating arm creating a moving jet that breaks up into droplets. The swinging motion of the arm facilitates the deposition of a strip of blood drops on a target surface. (b) Snapshots from the side view high-speed video of blood drops impacting a target surface. The time difference between each snapshot is 0.5 ms. (c) Superimposed image of the high-speed video that includes the snapshots in (b) from which R, U and α for each drop are measured. Indeed, the tail length can reflect information about the size, impact speed, and impact angle of the blood drop that formed the stain.

When measured for several blood stains in a stain pattern, the trajectories of the drops can be backtracked to their presumed origin.

While their analysis employed only horizontal surfaces to examine impact velocity dynamics, Bird and his colleagues hope it triggers more studies that focus on the length of the tail in bloodstain patterns.

They believe that incorporating tail length into standard bloodstain analyses will produce more robust evidentiary information.

“Knowing the origin of the blood stains at a crime scene can help detectives determine whether a victim was standing or sitting, or help corroborate or question a witness’s testimony,” said Bird.

  46. Now, we said ‘new’ fishing slots at regular intervals, but there’s not very much new about Bigger Bass Blizzard, aside from the skin change. There are minor things; two of the most noticeable were the reduced RTP and the added bonus buy functionality for players with access. So really, unless you’re utterly enamoured with all things cold or are absolutely hanging out for Bigger Bass Bonanza with a bonus buy, there’s little to no reason to pick this over the previous one. Potential has remained the same at 4,000x the bet, and the core gaming is more or less unchanged as well. With a 96.08% RTP rate and 4,000 times bet max wins, celebrate the winter season in style with Bigger Bass Blizzard. Try the demo below and check out OLBG’s extensive portfolio of demo play slots. 49. Yes, Big Bass Bonanza is designed to be as mobile-friendly as a well-equipped fishing boat. Pragmatic Play has ensured that this slot game is optimized for both iOS and Android devices, allowing players to enjoy the game’s features seamlessly on the go. The interface is tailored for smaller screens, ensuring that your fishing expedition is just a few taps away, anytime and anywhere. During free spins, each wild that hits collects the values from all money symbols in view. The fish are the money symbols, and each can have a value of 2x to 1,000x the bet. Wilds are collected, too. Every fourth wild symbol collected retriggers the feature, awarding +10 more free spins and a multiplier for money symbol collection of x2 for the first retrigger, x3 for the second retrigger, and x10 for the third retrigger. Retriggered spins are played after the current batch of free spins ends, and the multiplier applies to the retriggered spins.

Big Bass Bonanza rules are quite simple and straightforward. The game has 5 reels and a 10-payline setup. It’s a medium volatility game, which means you might see frequent wins on the smaller symbols but rare wins on the bigger symbols. If you keep your bet amount low, you can ride out the dry spell and enter the bonus round. Overall, the animation and soundtrack of Bigger Bass Bonanza create a chilled out vacation vibe. Just like its predecessor, Bigger Bass Bonanza uses a fishing theme. The reels continue floating just below the ocean’s surface, but the background image has changed. This time, it appears players are casting off closer to the shore, which is made clear by palm trees and neon-lit buildings. Visuals are equally crisp and brightly coloured, with the new 1980s style soundtrack adding more dynamics to the gameplay.
