British company MetMo crowdfunded a curious steel cube desk toy in 2019 with two pneumatic metal pins that seem to magically fuse with the cube without any gap.

It’s not magic though, it’s engineering: the MetMo cube is manufactured using advanced wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) that has continually developed since its invention in the 1940s.

The method uses extremely thin wires and super hot sparks (8-12k degrees Celsius) to melt/vaporise material, making metal cuts at 0.02mm, with +/- 0.001mm tolerances (human hair is 0.08mm).

The original crowdfunding campaign raised £63,379 and the third generation MK3 MetMo cube is currently available for £249.99.
