From Superinnovators 01/11/23. This article is in TLDR (Too Long Didn’t Read) format which is popular in the innovation community and provides a bullet summary of information.
- Introduction to vertical loaders: Vertical loaders, such as those produced by VAKO and Combilift, are innovative hydraulic systems designed to tilt shipping containers from a horizontal position to 90°, facilitating optimal loading and unloading.
- Applications: Vertical loaders are ideal for bulk goods and scrap metal, with the entire hydraulic system enabling containers to be loaded or unloaded within minutes.
- Two types: There are two main types of loaders: those integrated into the transportation trailer and standalone mechanical lifting machines such a straddle carriers. Both have been in use for decades.
- Loading process: Once in vertical position, the goods or contents of the containers can be swiftly loaded using various equipment such as cranes, conveyor belts, and pipes. Examples of bulk goods include: fishmeal, grain, seeds, minerals, chemical products and aggregates.
- Trailer-based vertical loader: VAKO produces trailer-based vertical loaders for 20ft containers and is currently developing one for 40ft containers.
- Ease of use: VAKO’s TwistLocks device automatically fixes the container to the hydraulic lifting system on the trailer bed, saving time and increasing user-friendliness.
- Straddle carriers: Combilift produces a straddle carrier which can tip containers in a vertical position for loading as well as maneuver them around logistics facilities in horizontal position.
